Botox® and Dysport® Therapy

OnabotulinumtoxinA (Botox®) and AbobotulinumtoxinA (Dysport®) have been used safely and effectively for over 20 years to treat the visual signs of aging by reducing or removing wrinkles.  The procedure is considered a safe and effective way of treating aging skin.  Common areas for botulinum injections include horizontal forehead furrows or vertical "frown-lines" between the eyebrows and "crow's feet" around the eyes.  A mini "brow-lift" can also be acheived, as well as many other enhancements to your facial expression.

Botox® and Dysport® are a class of medicines known Neuromodulators.  They are purified natural proteins used to relax the muscles that cause facial wrinkles for a smooth and rejuvenated appearance.

Should dentists be providing injectable facial aesthetic therapies?

YES!  As dental professionals, we have an intimate and expansive knowledge of human facial anatomy and muscle physiology.  Your SMILE is a very important facial expression and a high level of understanding is required by anyone using any injectable therapeutic in a way that may alter any facial expression.  As well, there is arguably no other health care professional that has as much day-to-day experience delivering comfortable injections as does a dentist.

As smile experts, we have indepth knowledge and experience on how botulinum neuromodulators affect the muscles of your face and your facial expression.

General Procedure

The procedure works by altering the facial muscles beneath the skin that are related to wrinkles.  Typically a small amount (1-2 cc’s) of Botox® / Dysport® is injected into the area of the wrinkle using a very small needle, similar to those used by diabetics.  The medicine works by blocking the impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles, thereby relaxing them.  The result is a physical relaxation the underlying facial muscles relax and the skin begins to smooth out.  The entire procedure takes about 10-15 minutes.  The effects of an Botox® / Dysport® treatment will last approximately three to four months after which the patient may choose to repeat the procedure.

Zero Down Time

Our clients generally return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure, however we recommend following a few simple post-procedure guidelines maximize the effect of your treatment.   Avoid engaging in heavy physical exercise, applying cosmetics, or laying down flat for a minimum of 4 hours after the injections.  It is also advisable to avoid rubbing or massaging the injected area for at least 24 hours.
